Mpumalanga

The Place of the Rising Sun

It is a long trek to Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park if you go by car, but it can be made interesting along the way. Just to stop in the Karoo and have some “padkos” is one way. Sometimes interesting things happen out of the blue...

To be in a dentist’s chair in Pretoria 2 days into the journey, was a surprise, but everything worked out fine and not even the toll-gates (why toll plaza?) could dampen our spirits en route to the bushveld: Marloth Park, Sitara, Graskop, God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon. Quite breathtaking. The Big 5 were missed by 1, the rhino, but it was really worthwhile seeing and experiencing the wildlife.

The negatives ? The dry veld which was full of black patches from fires, but that is winter and was expected. The positives? The wealth of sights and experiences and being back in the green and beautiful Western Cape and beating the Land of the Rising Sun in the Rugby World Cup.
